February 2023

Fantastic February!

Last weekend, I got to spend a couple of hours hanging out at the library with the amazingly talented Brooke from Photography by Brooke. I’d told her I wanted some headshots with personality and (badly) described the vibe I was looking for, and wow, did she deliver! In fact, she did such a good job that I’m having a hard time picking which photos to use!

This month I am finalizing details for publishing my first poetry book, Scribbles, Rhymes, and Lima Beans. This includes a lot of work on marketing content behind-the-scenes, which has been really fun to explore. A new cover is in the works and I can't wait to share it with everyone!

On My Bookshelf...

My current hyper-fixation is Murdoch Mysteries, a Canadian TV show about a detective who solves murders in 1920s Toronto. Murder mysteries are not generally my favorite genre, but I love the historical context and the fact that the show explores the beginnings of forensic investigation techniques. I was even more excited to discover that the show is based on a book series, so I rushed to my library(’s website) to check it out. The first book, Except the Dead by Maureen Jennings, is set before the show begins, when Murdoch is still just an acting detective. I’m only a few chapters in, but I’m liking it so far!

Poetry Corner

In honor of Valentine’s Day, here’s a little love poem!

Smitten

You doubt I’ve been smitten—
I haven’t yet written
a poem declaring love.
I doubt I could do it,
I’ve never gone through it,
this thing you’re thinking of.

My words are a-flutter,
my heartbeat a stutter,
my thoughts won’t settle still;
each butterfly lingers
whenever his fingers
play music on my will.

A melody soaring,
this fire set roaring
whenever we’re alone.
We’re hearts of a feather,
so how could I tether
such feelings to a poem?
